Stroke Rehabilitation in Canterbury, Sydney
Recovering from a stroke means relearning movements you once did without thinking — getting out of a chair, walking to the kitchen, lifting your arm to reach a shelf. At Enable Exercise in Canterbury, our stroke rehabilitation program starts with what matters most to you: getting back to the life you want to lead, as independently as possible.
Our team of neurological exercise physiologists works with stroke survivors at every stage of recovery — whether you’re weeks post-discharge or years on and looking to push further. We see clients at our Canterbury clinic, in your home, and via telehealth, so rehabilitation fits around your life, your energy, and your schedule.
If you or someone you love has had a stroke, early and ongoing specialised exercise makes a real difference to long-term recovery. We’re here to guide that process, one session at a time.
How exercise physiology helps after a stroke
The brain’s ability to rewire itself — neuroplasticity — is your greatest recovery asset after a stroke. Targeted, repetitive movement is what drives that rewiring. Exercise physiology for stroke rehabilitation isn’t general fitness; it’s a structured, progressive program designed to retrain the specific motor pathways your stroke affected.
The evidence is clear: task-specific, higher-intensity exercise delivered by a qualified neurological exercise physiologist produces better functional outcomes than passive care alone. That means working on the movements that actually matter to you — walking more safely, regaining use of your affected arm, managing post-stroke fatigue, and reducing your risk of falls.
Our physiologists assess exactly where your neurological and physical function sits right now, then build a program that challenges you at the right level. We progress load and complexity as your capacity improves, using specialised rehabilitation equipment and evidence-based techniques. The goal is always functional: how your training translates to carrying your own shopping bag, walking to the park, or getting back to the activities you love.
What your sessions look like
Your rehabilitation starts with a thorough assessment — your stroke history, current function, medications, fatigue patterns, and the specific goals that matter most to you and your family. From there we build a phased program.
Early sessions focus on foundational movement: safe transfers, balance, basic gait retraining, and targeted limb work. As your capacity grows, sessions shift toward more complex, real-world tasks and higher-intensity training. We track progress against objective measures and adjust as you go.
Sessions are available at our Canterbury clinic, with home visits covering Campsie, Earlwood, Belmore, Lakemba, Marrickville, and Hurlstone Park — and telehealth for days when getting out isn’t possible. Many clients combine all three, especially in the first weeks after discharge. We work closely with your treating team — neurologist, GP, or hospital therapists — to make sure nothing falls through the cracks.
Funding — NDIS, Medicare, DVA & private
Stroke rehabilitation at Enable Exercise is accessible through several funding pathways. If stroke has left you with a permanent or significant functional impairment, you may be eligible for NDIS support under Capacity Building — Improved Daily Living. A GP-referred Chronic Disease Management plan (Team Care Arrangement) provides Medicare-rebated exercise physiology sessions. DVA covers exercise physiology for eligible veterans, and many private health extras policies include it too — check your level of cover. Self-funded sessions are also available with no referral required.
Call us and we’ll help you work out exactly what funding you can access before your first appointment.
